The 12th Hong Kong Homebrew Competition is the second competition I had the opportunity to attend as a judge in 2024, following The 12th Taiwan Homebrew Competition. The homebrew competition in Hong Kong started 13 years ago, simultaneously with Taiwan (currently the 13th for Hong Kong). I met many friends at the Taiwan competition, one of whom was a Hong Kong judge. He introduced me to the organizers of the competition in Hong Kong, and this was the beginning of my second journey to judge beer abroad.

Turning crisis into opportunity

I proposed an exchange of judges and homebrew between Thailand and Hong Kong, marking the first time the Hong Kong Homebrew Competition welcomed participants from Thailand to add color and excitement to homebrew in Hong Kong.

Summary of the 2024 competition (12th edition)
The judging took place on November 23, 2024, at Heros Beer Co. brewery, with approximately 40 judges from Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, and China. About 165 teams participated, including competitors from Thailand, making it the year with the highest number of participants ever.

Due to the limited space of the brewery, the judging atmosphere was warm, including tables located in the Brewhouse. At each table, there may be several beer style groups, with 2-3 judges for each group, as this competition accepts all beer styles according to the BJCP Beer Style Guidelines.

The judging used a shortened BJCP Scoresheet for speed, but the organizers still informed the judges to prioritize writing feedback, as most brewers submitting beers for the competition are still at a beginner level. The judges' feedback is therefore an important part that will help brewers improve their production process.

In this first year, Thai competitors received a total of 4 awards out of 22 awards, including:
Pale Ale Category.
3rd Place: AKKANUT CHAITOSA / American Pale Ale. 
Dark Category.
1st Place: Watcharaphol Sirismoporn / Imperial Stout Shanghai / Imperial Stout.
2nd Place: Watcharaphol Sirisomporn / Imperial Stout O-liens / Imperial Stout.
Mead/Cider Category.
3rd Place: Chanchai Russamee / Mangooo / Cider with other Fruit.

Today, although the various situations are not very favorable for the craft beer and homebrew market in Hong Kong, this competition continues, not for the medals, but as a gathering of people passionate about beer, to share knowledge and experiences with each other, waiting for the day to showcase their potential again.
